So you’ve made the decision to engage with a global logistics management provider. Now what? You probably realize it’s critically important to keep everything flowing smoothly—especially during the transition and implementation. But figuring out how to do that may elude you. The answer may be to have someone from your new provider actually work in your building. A strategic onsite resource is often a great option whether you’re getting started or have been working with logistics providers for years.

The key to a successful strategic onsite relationship is in the trust that your company builds with that individual. There are several things you can do both before and after the person who will be onsite arrives at your location to start building a strong relationship.

  1. Identify a credible corporate relationship champion. Some people resist change. A credible corporate champion with the authority to enforce change can help integrate an onsite resource by enabling them to quickly communicate internally and with trading partners.
  2. Level-set expectations internally. The corporate champion can help level-set expectations with internal stakeholders so the onsite resource isn’t overwhelmed with competing priorities.
  3. Decide what to measure. Define what and how you will measure, including formulas and definitions, so everyone stays focused on what’s important.
  4. Align internal groups behind strategic company objectives. The strategic onsite resource will have a different perspective of your business. They can use technology and analysis to rally multiple disciplines in your company behind a single objective.
  5. Advocate for your company’s needs. They can help influence their own company’s priorities and technical investments to help solve your challenges.
  6. Consult and manage special projects. Rely on them to identify dramatic efficiencies and savings and use technology to connect internal and external stakeholders.
  7. Bring ongoing ideas for improvement from coworker and industry networks. Give onsite resources time to gather fresh perspectives that they can return to your organization.
